Those that have been roleplaying for a bit- heck, even those who have been playing for six months- may have heard more senior players complain about things such as mary-sues (those annoyingly perfect characters that are played to have no flaws, even if their bio says they do), cliques among other players, elitism among the staff, and other such things that tend to click the roleplay passion button to a resounding 'off'. Even those of us who believe we have not fallen into any of these categories above have still toed the edges, even if we didn't know it at the time.
Take me, for example. If you've read my intro, you've read that I've been roleplaying for nigh on eleven years now. That gives me a lot of experience dealing with the crap listed above, plus much more. That also gives me the tenacity to admit that I've been guilty of at least one of those things, at least once. Sometimes, it's been on purpose. Others, it's been purely by accident.
I've had Gary-Stu/Mary-Sue characters that I slathered all over boards with a vengeance, not really because I was purposeful in my intent, but because I was very young in my roleplaying career and simply didn't know any better- something I'm rather glad to have grown out of the habit of; my characters now have as many wonderful flaws as I. I've unknowingly enrolled into cliques that have inadvertently shut out other players. I mean, come on! You find five or so other players who are your roleplay twins, that just seem to jive right alongside your character and writing style, and you end up following each other around with the same fervor and passion as a pack of puppies, snarling at stray dogs who try to disrupt the pack dynamic. This, also, is something that I believe that we have all done, or will do, at least once in our roleplay lives, whether we actively mean to, or not. I'm guilty of it, though I admit to trying very very hard not to fall under the influence anymore. In fact, I make a valiant effort not to.
So now it's time to be perfectly candid with yourself and others on this board. What roleplay mishaps are you guilty of? Are you still guilty of it, purposefully or otherwise? If you say you've never created any of these infractions, yet have been roleplaying for more than three months, I won't believe you
